Folium, 2021

The beginnings of Folium started with a simple desire to create shelving. I wanted to bring an element of movement and user customisation to this project, all the while ensuring it was both elegant and functional.

Working playfully with organic shapes and differing proportions through a combination of sketching and templates catalysed the real development within this project. The leaf shape descends in footprint but conversely grows proportionally in height throughout the shelving unit. Each of the five shelves are constructed from layered pine board, with the three in the middle rotating around a steel rod axis, whilst the top and bottom provide a tiered pressed structure and a surface for wall fixings.

The final object is compact when closed but provides a tactile form that can be arranged by the user, making it open both in shape and functionality. Folium was exhibited at The Young Furniture Makers Exhibition a few years ago in the Furniture Makers Hall, City of London.
